THE FREUNDLICH RECALL At first, they simply asked for her back. Ralph A. Freundlich, Inc. was once a respected Massachusetts doll manufacturer. But buried within the company's surviving correspondence is an unusual request concerning an experimental doll that had been released for private evaluation. The language was polite. Please return the prototype as soon as possible. Then came another request. And another. Eventually, it stopped sounding like a request. Exactly what the Freundlich development department discovered remains unclear. What we know is that at least one prototype was never returned. Nearly a century later, collectors are still finding them. Which raises an uncomfortable question: What did Freundlich know that made them want their dolls back?
